US Open rocked as body ‘betrays’ injury-cursed Matteo Berrettini

US Open rocked as body ‘betrays’ injury-cursed Matteo Berrettini

The US Open has been rocked by the distressing sight of fan favourite Matteo Berrettini collapsing to the ground.

The popular Italian twisted his ankle during a heavy fall, and was screaming on the ground (watch in the video above) as unbearable pain shot through his injury-cursed body.

Later, vision emerged of him in a wheelchair with his head in his hands and fans saying, “we love you, Matteo”.

He was trailing in the second set at the time of incident and obviously took no further part in the match.

While on the ground, ballkids surrounded him to form a shield with umbrellas.

Between the screams, he could be heard mumbling, “oh no”.

The forfeit handed Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech an easy path to the tournament’s third round.

There were stirring scenes as fans applauded Berrettini while he managed to get back on his feet to shake Rinderknech’s hand.

Berrettini, 27, is the current world No.36 and a Wimbledon finalist. He has, however, been ranked as high as No.6 at the start of 2022.

But time and time again his body has let him down.

Tennis fans took to social media to express their dismay.

“No words. I feel so sorry for Matteo Berrettini. All that talent and your body just betrays you. Fails you. Who to blame? Sigh,” one tennis fan said.

Another fan said: “Matteo Berrettini once won 18 straight grand slam matches without losing to anyone not named Djokovic or Nadal. The sport is better when this guy is healthy. Very sad to see.”

Popular tennis account The Tennis Letter called the moment “horrific”.

“Matteo Berrettini left the US Open in a wheelchair,” they wrote..

“It’s difficult to explain just how horrific his luck has been.

“The amount of injuries he’s had just isn’t right.

“What’s most frustrating is that there’s no one to blame but the universe.”

Another fan said: “I have no words, honestly … I feel so bad for him. Let’s hope he won’t be out for too long.”
