Tennis champion Jannik Sinner saddened by Italian BJK Cup captain Tathiana Garbin’s rare tumour diagnosis

Tennis champion Jannik Sinner saddened by Italian BJK Cup captain Tathiana Garbin’s rare tumour diagnosis

The tennis community has rallied around Italy’s Billie Jean King Cup captain Tathiana Garbin as she battles a rare tumour in her stomach.

The 46-year-old former world No.22 was diagnosed during the US Open in August but only announced the health battle hours after her team lost the BJK Cup final two weeks ago.

She said it is a one-in-a-million diagnosis.

“Life as an athlete has accustomed me to facing problems, finding solutions and managing on the court,” Garbin told Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport.

“The attitude remains the same even towards the disease. Then, if the opponent is too much stronger, you can only shake his hand and leave the field – but always after giving everything, with your head held high.

“I’m not afraid of dying. I have had a wonderful life, blessed with a gift like that of sporting talent.

“I lived everything appreciating every minute. I wouldn’t change my beautiful life for a longer but tasteless one without emotions.”

Garbin attended the BJK Cup final soon after having her first round of surgery, and promptly returned to hospital for a second operation.

Her Italian stars Lucrezia Stefanini, Martina Trevisan, Lucia Bronzetti and Jasmine Paolini – plus Elisabetta Cocciaretto on a video call – paid an emotional visit in a show of support for their captain.

Jannik Sinner also offered a touching tribute after Italy defeated Australia in the Davis Cup final on Sunday.

Taking the focus off the biggest night of his career, the 22-year-old looked ahead to Garbin’s next surgery.

“Tomorrow is an important day for Tathiana. We hope that this victory can give her strength. We will all be with her,” Sinner said.

“Here, we talk about winning the Davis Cup. Yes, that’s nice. History is being made and we’re all happy.

“But what matters to her in life is something entirely different. We should feel very fortunate to be in this position that we are and will all be in with her.”

Garbin’s Davis Cup counterpart Filippo Volandri sent a supportive message.

“She and I share the joys and sorrows of this wonderful role,” the men’s captain said.

“She is following us every day, we write to each other practically every day. Good luck to Tati.”

Garbin had a 15-year playing career and defeated world No.4 Monica Seles at Indian Wells in 2001 before an even more famous win over world No.1 Justine Henin at the 2004 French Open.

She has been captain of Italy’s BJK Cup since 2016.

Garbin had gone public with her cancer in the hopes of raising awareness.

“Today, I would like to share with all of you an important part of my life journey. It is with serenity and confidence that I announce that in October I underwent surgery to treat a rare tumour,” she said in a statement.

“It is my intention to share this personal experience with the aim of raising awareness among the public and athletes of the importance of medical research and prevention. Early diagnosis and proper medical support are key to facing any challenge and I hope my story can inspire others to pay attention to their health.

“I would like to express my profound gratitude to the extraordinary doctors of the Cisanello Hospital in Pisa, specifically Prof. Di Candio and Prof. Morelli who followed my case, carrying out the operation I had to undergo with great skill. Thanks to their expertise and dedication, I was able to benefit from a rapid recovery which allowed me to participate in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals and to look to the future with confidence.

“Heartfelt thanks also go to my federation, which with extraordinary solidarity and sensitivity supported me and gave me full support in this crucial moment of my life and career. Seville was a very important event for me, which I absolutely didn’t want to miss despite it being very close to the operation: the federation showed me full trust, strengthening my commitment to giving my all for the team and our nation.

“There is nothing that makes me more proud than representing the colours of Italy. The love for this shirt, for this sport, for my girls allowed me to quickly recover the energy to sit on the bench and not lack my support.”
