Roger Federer post deleted over ‘negative’ backlash to Lindsey Vonn comment

Roger Federer post deleted over ‘negative’ backlash to Lindsey Vonn comment

Winter sports icon Lindsey Vonn has defended herself after deleting a post celebrating a long-awaited ski date with tennis legend Roger Federer that copped a ‘negative’ backlash.

The Olympic gold medallists had been waiting years to hit the slopes, and so when it finally happened this week Vonn celebrated with posts and videos on social media — and a special message to the 20-time grand slam champion.

But the reaction turned nasty when Vonn was targeted for calling Federer her ‘forever GOAT’ — a hot-button issue among Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal fans.

“Have to take some time to really reflect on what this means to me. I have admired Roger as an athlete, philanthropist and incredible champion for so many years,” Vonn wrote in her original post.

“Normally, people you look up to always let you down in one way or another, but not Roger. Rog is the epitome of a true sportsman and champion in every sense of the word.

“We’ve been talking about skiing together for such a long time I wasn’t sure if it would happen… but here we are. Retired, skiing and enjoying life! Thanks for this memory Rog.

“You and your family are truly one of a kind and no matter what the statistics say (or Leo lol) you’re my forever GOAT. Because it takes a lot more than numbers to make the kind of impact you have. I’m just one of millions. Cheers my friend.”

Vonn’s remark that statistics aren’t everything in the GOAT debate, which seemingly sparked a back-and-forth with Federer’s son Leo, proved divisive.

The American responded to one fan who hit back to declare Mikaela Shiffrin and Djokovic are “the only GOATs” in skiing and tennis.

“Yes they are for sure and full respect to both. But I don’t classify GOATs on statistics alone. Rog will always be the GOAT to me,” Vonn replied.

“Also, there can be more than one GOAT. I consider Rog, Djoko and Rafa to be GOATs.”

Vonn subsequently deleted the original post on X (formerly Twitter) and replaced it with a shorter version, blocking comments from the wider public, though the original remained untouched on Instagram.

“I wasn’t forced (to delete it), I just didn’t want the negative comments ruining my memory,” she explained.

“And the post wasn’t a comparison, it was a tribute to my friend who has made a big impact in my life. Everyone just freaks out when the term GOAT is used. He can be my GOAT no matter what other people think.”

Vonn was pictured at Federer’s US Open matches as early as 2014 while she also watched the tennis legend at the 2019 French Open, the pair sharing a courtside high-five after he won a match in Paris.

Vonn moved on from the GOAT drama by inviting another tennis star to the snow.

“So cool!!!” Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki wrote.

Vonn replied: “We have to go!”

Bear Grylls also left a comment and received the same offer from Vonn, who skied with snowboarding and skateboarding legend Shaun White earlier in the week.

Vonn retired in 2019 and only just saw her World Cup wins record broken by Shiffrin last year.

Federer played his last professional match in 2021 and saw Nadal and Djokovic both surpass his grand slam record in 2022.
