Novak Djokovic pays tribute to Kobe Bryant after winning 24th grand slam at US Open against Daniil Medvedev

Novak Djokovic pays tribute to Kobe Bryant after winning 24th grand slam at US Open against Daniil Medvedev

Novak Djokovic has paid a touching tribute to late basketball legend Kobe Bryant after sealing his 24th grand slam victory at the US Open.

Moments after securing a straight sets win over Russian Daniil Medvedev, Djokovic stripped out of his playing shirt and put on a specially made ‘Mamba Forever’ shirt with the number 24 on the back, which represents both Djokovic’s record-equaling milestone and the number Bryant wore for most of his NBA career.

He also had a custom made white jacket with the number 24 printed on the breast pocket, as did his family and team on the sidelines, which was a sequel to the jacket he wore after claiming the Australian Open in January.

Speaking after the historic match, Djokovic explained the t-shirt was his idea.

“I thought of doing this t-shirt eventually if I got the chance to win the tournament. It was about seven days ago,” he said during his interview on the dais.

“I didn’t share it with anyone until a few days ago when I asked my people to help me out to make this shirt.

“Kobe was close friend, we chatted a lot about the winners’ mentality when I was struggling with injury and trying to make my comeback, work my way back to the top of the game.

“He was one of the people I rely on the most. He was always there for any kind of counsel, advice, support in a most friendly way.

“So, of course what happened a few years ago with him and his daughter passing hurt me deeply. I though 24 is the jersey he wore when he became a legend of Lakers and world basketball so I thought it could be a nice symbolic thing to acknowledge him for all the things he has done.”

The straight-sets victory means Djokovic, who at 36 becomes the oldest man to win the Flushing Meadows title in the professional era, has equalled the all-time majors record of Australia’s Margaret Court.

The clash was a rematch of the 2021 final, which Medvedev won in straight sets for his lone major title and denying Djokovic a fabled calendar-year grand slam sweep.

Djokovic has now taken three of the four available grand slam titles in 2023, having also won the Australian Open and Roland Garros while losing the Wimbledon final in five sets to Spanish wonder Carlos Alcaraz.

His fourth title from 10 Flushing Meadows finals also propels the Serb back to the top of the rankings, replacing dethroned champion Alcaraz.

Of more importance to Djokovic is his record against his peers; he is now two clear of Nadal’s 22 grand slam crowns and four ahead of Roger Federer, who declared on 20 last year.

Third-seeded Medvedev, who knocked out Australians Chris O’Connell and Alex de Minaur as well as reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the final, has now lost four grand slam title deciders – two each to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev lost to Nadal in New York in 2019 and Melbourne last year, and was beaten by Djokovic at the 2021 Australian Open.
