New Australian Open doubles champ Matt Ebden hits out over disrespect to partner

New Australian Open doubles champ Matt Ebden hits out over disrespect to partner

While new Australian Open doubles champion Matt Ebden may have had the last laugh on the court, he says the attitude towards his partner is no laughing matter.

The 36-year-old Aussie was the toast of the doubles world on Saturday night when he and Indian ace Rohan Bopanna defeated Italian duo Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6 (7-0) 7-5 in the final on Rod Laver Arena.

In doing so Bopanna —who is 43 years young — became the new world No.1 and the oldest man in the Open era to win a grand slam doubles title, lifting the trophy on his 61st appearance in a men’s doubles draw, which is also the most attempts before a victory.

Incredibly Bopanna — whose only previous slam win was in the mixed doubles at the French Open in 2017 — was playing in his 17th Australian Open with his 12th different partner.

But Ebden and Bopanna smashed the doubters who had been focussing on their birth certificates and Ebden had a strong message for to those who were attacking Bopanna’s age.

“We see sexism, but there is a thing, ageism … and we see it a lot in media, people, culture, whatever,” Ebden said after the famous win.

“Of course I have the oldest partner on the tour.

“Guys say, ‘Oh, he’s so old, too old’.

“What I’ve heard in the last year and half – seriously, I’m like: ‘Alright guys, and …?’ Watch how the guy plays tennis, what does age have to do with it?

“It’s not to be respected in an egotistical way, it’s to be respected in looking at the possibilities.

“That’s what Rohan is a symbol of right now. He’ll inspire the whole Indian generation.

“I hope us as Australians, or our youngsters, too, can learn some of those similar lessons and even our culture in general.

“I think there’s a lot of wisdom to give back to the youngsters.

“We all know what it’s like, people older than us. We look at this or that, they shouldn’t get a job or they can’t do that, yada yada.

“Well, why not? We’re all people. We celebrate all sorts of equality.”

Ebden said he was thrilled with the victory and it may have even overtaken his 2022 Wimbledon title win with fellow Aussie Max Purcell as his No.1 highlight.

“I’m not going to lie, Wimbledon is a special place for us as tennis players, we know that,” he said.

“But this is equally as good or better, doing it at home with family, friends and home fans in Australia.
