Former tennis star Jelena Dokic reveals baby plans: ‘Always wanted to do that’

Former tennis star Jelena Dokic reveals baby plans: ‘Always wanted to do that’

Jelena Dokic has revealed her baby plans, saying she “wants” and “loves” kids and hopes to be a mother one day.

The 40-year-old former tennis player and commentator said she had planned to have children with her ex-partner, Tin Bikic.

“My ex-boyfriend Tin and I were going to have kids,” she told Woman’s Day.

“Maybe that situation will not happen for me and that’s okay, I’ve made peace with that,” she added, referring to the possibility of conceiving biological children.

“But if I do have kids – and I do want kids, because I love them – I’m going to go the adoption route.

“I’ve always wanted to do that.”

Jelena Dokic opens up on ‘crushing’ relationship breakup

Dokic said she knew she could provide a stable home for a child, even as a single parent.

“It’s something I think I might do in the next three to five years,” she revealed.

“It’s been two years now and I struggled (with the breakup) at the beginning, it was a shock, there’s no doubt about that,” she told Woman’s Day.

She added that she was “in a great place” now and hadn’t given up on finding love.

“I do believe in love but I’m someone who is a little bit more of an introvert and a little bit shy,” she explained.

“It’s not something I’m ready to do at the moment.

In another interview with Stellar, Dokic opened up about her years of disordered eating, which she attributes to the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father Damir.

“I actually haven’t talked about my eating disorder (before) because, for so long, I didn’t understand it,” she said.

“But now I know that for more than 90 per cent of people that do have eating disorders, it comes from trauma.”

She explained that getting professional help saved her life.

“I find the eating disorder quite complex,” she said.

“I’m working really hard on it.”

Dokic has penned a new book called Fearless: Feeling the Power to Thrive, the writing of which was a therapeutic process in itself.

In June, Dokic said the book was about finding hope when it seems that all hope is lost.

The former world No.4 shared the book’s blurb with her followers, noting that Fearless follows on from first book Unbreakable’s story of overcoming “adversity, poverty and violence” to rise to the top of the tennis world.

“Fearless is about how you reclaim life when all feels lost,” the blurb states.

“It’s about learning to reach out for help and healing.

“It’s about speaking up and the power of sharing our stories.

“In past years Jelena has dealt with disordered eating and reclaimed her body; she has stood up to body shaming and online abuse.
