Australian tennis players marry in busy weekend of sporting weddings around the world

Australian tennis players have celebrated two weddings on a busy weekend in one of the shortest off-seasons in professional sport.

The men’s and women’s tours shut down every December before the Australian Open and its lead-up events ring in the new year.

And for five players that meant finally being able to say I do.

Queenslander John-Patrick Smith proposed to his American partner Lauren during last year’s December break.

Fittingly, they waited until this year’s off-season to marry in Byron Bay.

The pair initially met online before crossing paths in person when Smith’s tennis calendar took him to a tournament in Long Island.

“The first date was a success and they navigated being worlds apart, as their relationship deepened!!” celebrant Ben Carlyle wrote.

“Lauren is now JP’s hype squad on tour and best adventure buddy!! They’re totally each other’s best mate and No.1 cheerleader.”

Smith, who reached the 2021 Australian Open mixed doubles final, held his wedding one day after Olympian and Davis Cup representative James Duckworth married his partner Madi in Queensland.

Duckworth’s occasional doubles partner Luke Saville was a groomsman while the guest list featured several other Australian tennis players.

John Millman and Matt Reid attended both the Smith and Duckworth weddings.

Daria Saville, John Millman, Priscilla Hon, Kim Birrell, Maddy Inglis, Lizette Carbera, Alex Bolt and Chris O’Connell were all at the latter.

The Aussie ceremonies came on a weekend where four other tennis players also said I do – including two to each other.

Russian young guns Anastasia Potapova, 22, and Alexander Shevchenko, 23, married at the end of their best seasons yet on tour.

Potapova reached the world’s top 25 on the WTA tour and Shevchenko cracked the ATP top 50.

In the United States, cult figure Tennys Sandgren married his partner Christianna in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sandgren made the Australian Open quarter-finals twice, most recently in 2020 when he almost upset Roger Federer for a spot in the semis.
