Aryna Sabalenka dominates Zheng Qinwen to win back-to-back Australian Opens

Aryna Sabalenka dominates Zheng Qinwen to win back-to-back Australian Opens

Aryna Sabalenka has stormed to her second Australian Open title with a straight-sets demolition of 12th seed Zheng Qinwen on Saturday night.

The defending champion was in ominous touch early to quickly race out to a 3-0 lead and was virtually unstoppable in wrapping up the 6-3 6-2 win in just over an hour.

With the victory, Sabalenka becomes the ninth women to win back-to-back Australian Open titles after Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.

It completed a stunning tournament for the Belarusian, who didn’t drop a set across her seven matches.

She joins Ash Barty (2022), Serena Williams (2017), Maria Sharapova (2008) and Lindsay Davenport (2000) as only the fifth woman this century to lift the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup without dropping a set.

“This is Serena-esque about what we have seen tonight,” commentator Sam Smith said during the domination.

After holding her opening service game, Sabalenka quickly asserted her authority to break Zheng’s opening service game.

It continued a remarkable run where Sabalenka has broken her opponent’s serve in every match this tournament, except for Barbora Krejcikova, who was broken in her second service game.

“That how good she’s opened up in every single match and she’s done it again in the final,” Smith said.

Zheng had three chances to break back immediately, but couldn’t convert and suddenly it was one-way traffic.

Zheng did her best to hold on, but was powerless to stop Sabalenka as the second seed quickly wrapped up the first set.

Three double faults to open the second set gifted Sabalanka another break of serve and from there it was just a matter of time.

Her first serve was unplayable at times with the only blip coming in the final game where she needed five match points to seal the title.

“For me, this is the best I have seen Sabalenka play ever and she’s just getting better,” Jelena Dokic said in commentary.

“You just wonder how much she will win this season.”

Zheng’s consolation is a rise from 15th in the rankings to world No.7 and a career pay day of $1.725 million.

“Congrats to Aryna to have such wonderful match here and it’s my first final,” Zheng said.

“I’m feeling a little bit pity but it is this experience for me.

“At the same time, I want to say thanks for all the fans who come here to watch me.

“I feel right now very complicated because I feel that I could do it better, but I didn’t in this match.

“But, anyway, I want to say thanks to my team to help me arrive here and also I really enjoyed to play in this Australia Open.

“That was an amazing memory for me and I’m sure there’s going to be more and better in the future.”
